Feminine Health: Are Tampons and Pads Safe?

As a society, many of us are becoming more health conscious: instead of consuming products that contain artificial colors, preservatives and GMO’s, people are opting for the all-natural varieties. We are slowly discovering what our ancestors knew all along: the healthiest (and safest) products are not man-made, they are derived from Mother Earth.

As we begin to make our health a top priority, one aspect of that must be made a top priority is feminine health and the use of pads and tampons.

Dangers of Tampons

While these products are convenient, that convenience comes at a cost. Here are a few things we should be aware of:

Mercury and oxidative stress. A recent study found a correlation between tampon use and elevated levels of mercury and oxidative stress markers in women. Studies are still ongoing.

Plastics (phthalates.) Phthalates is a

common ingredient found in plastics, which is used in a variety of products, ranging from water bottles to food containers. Most commercial pads contain these plastics as well. Studies indicate phthalates are linked to an increased risk of premature birth in humans.

Cotton. Many tampons and pads contain cotton, but that cotton may be hazardous to our health: Cottons grown in the U.S. and other countries are sprayed with pesticides, including the ingredient glyphosate. Earlier this year, a judge rendered a $2 billion dollar verdict against the company Bayer and its glyphosate-containing product Roundup.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is an infection that could occur when using tampons. Even though the risk of having TSS is rare, it could happen, and women must be aware of the risk.

This is just a small sample of the dangers lurking in feminine products. This should lead you to ask two important questions:

  1. How many health issues are being caused by these pads and tampons?

  1. How many of us are unknowingly taking medicine to alleviate symptoms that are caused by pads and tampons?

  1. How many of us never get to the root cause of our health issues, which is the use of tampons and pads?

It’s time to seriously consider seeking safer alternatives to these commercial tampon products.

Natural Feminine Hygiene Alternatives

Cloth pads. These are reusable pads that have a waterproof liner and are free of harmful plastics and man-made chemicals.

Natural/organic pads and tampons. These are a valid option for those who prefer to use traditional tampons and pads, minus the danger.

One such product is Seventh Generation. These feminine products are chlorine free and made without any deodorants or fragrances. They have several products to choose from, which include maxi pads, ultra-thins, tampons and panty-liners.

Menstrual cups. This reusable cup is place inside the vagina during monthly

cycles. They can be worn for up to 24 hours, with some users saying they are more comfortable than regular tampons. An added bonus is menstrual cups have shown no risk of causing Toxic Shock Syndrome.

PMS relief. Another issue many women deal with is menstrual cramps. Boiron – Cyclease PMS was specifically created to relieve menstrual discomfort. This product contains all-natural ingredients and contains no additives.

In addition to watching the foods we eat, its critical women are mindful of what feminine products they are using as well. What you don’t know can hurt you, and that’s especially true with tampons and pads.

By making a conscious effort to choose products that don’t harm our bodies, we are one step closer to living happier, healthier lives.
